SmallFood is closed

Thank you for being part of our story.

SmallFood was something very special to us: microgreens, grow kits, experiments, and people who believed in small green ideas. Unfortunately, because of the full-scale war and major changes in the founders’ lives, we had to close the shop. We do not know whether it will ever reopen.

SmallFood stays here for the memories. If the stars line up, someday we may try to bring it back to life.

Growing microgreens at home

Microgreens are a modern superfood: clean, fresh, and grown at home from untreated seeds. During their short growth stage, young plants collect a high concentration of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Their nutritional value is often much higher than that of mature vegetables because the plants are still in an active growth phase.

Microgreens are young shoots of vegetables and herbs. Their value comes from the concentration of nutrients in a small portion: just a handful can add flavor, color, and a useful boost to a salad, smoothie, sandwich, or finished dish.

The shoots keep the rich taste and aroma of the mature crop. They can be used as a main ingredient, a garnish, or an addition to smoothies and salads. In winter, when fresh greens are less available, microgreens are a simple way to add freshness at home. You only need untreated seeds, a tray, a substrate, moisture, warmth, and light. The full growing cycle usually takes 5-20 days depending on the crop.

Growing microgreens also gives you full control over what goes into the tray. You choose the crops, use seeds you trust, and harvest the greens right before serving them to your family.

Microgreens are not a supplement or an artificial product. They are young plants that have released their first leaves. They are popular with people who care about healthy food, vegetarian dishes, and simple home growing. They also look fresh and bright on a windowsill.

You could wait for the plant to reach its usual size, but the young stage is exactly what makes microgreens useful and interesting. The shoots are tender, aromatic, and easy to add to everyday meals.

A small tray of fresh sprouts can make home meals brighter, more varied, and more satisfying. It is a simple habit that brings fresh greens into the kitchen all year round.

Long story short:
  • Microgreens are rich in minerals and vitamins, which is especially useful in winter and spring.
  • Fresh trays are easy to replace because growing usually takes about a week and a half.
  • They can be eaten raw, served on their own, or added to salads and other dishes.
  • Growing them at home is simple, affordable, and works even on a windowsill.
